The Garden Club of the Upper Keys brings together gardeners, nature lovers, and community members who share a passion for the unique environment of the Florida Keys. Through education, conservation, and hands‑on projects, we work to protect and celebrate the natural beauty of our island home.
Our historic garden property, open daily to the public, showcases the remarkable diversity of the Florida Keys. More than 300 plant species grow throughout the grounds, each identified with botanical markers that highlight both common and scientific names.
Our mission is to develop, promote, protect, and conserve the natural beauty of the Upper Keys. We accomplish this through educational programs and in cooperation with our members and local residents. In support of our overall mission, we uphold four objectives:
To develop and augment knowledge and love of plants and gardening with a focus on native plants.
To promote community planting and beautification of the Upper Keys.
To protect and conserve our natural resources by educating visitors, both tourists and community members.
To maintain our gardens and garden center as teaching tools.
Our organization was originally founded in 1952 as the Key Largo Garden Club. Meetings were held at private homes. Two years later, the club had grown so large that it divided to form a new Upper Keys chapter. Our club continued to grow and needed a larger meeting space. A generous benefactor, Dr. Fred Bond, gave the organization the tract of land that now houses our clubhouse and grounds, which is named Francis Tracy Garden Center in honor of a the who was known as “our angel of mercy of the Keys” and who was instrumental in bringing Dr. Bond to the Keys.
Officially launched in 1956, the club was given a charter and non-profit status by the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs. There were many fundraising projects for several years for the building, furnishings, and grounds. Thus, the Francis Tracy Garden Center came into being with the first meeting held at the property in 1964. In 2012, the club reincorporated and is now known as The Garden Club of the Upper Keys, Inc.
Today, our club still remains at The Francis Tracy Garden Center. Our club continues with the passion and love of learning about the plants and natural environment of the Upper Keys. We invite you to join us as we continue to make history!

Developing our knowledge and love of plants...
Our monthly meetings feature a speaker or an activity that focus on plants, including natives, that are specific for growing in our special Keys environment (Zone 11).
Our newsletter News & Notes, our Facebook page and our website present information for the Keys gardener.
Field trips and our “Members Only” Garden Walk of members’ gardens offer a diverse view of gardening.
Promoting community planting and beautification...
Our members installed a pond and butterfly garden at Reef Environmental Education Foundation's headquarters.
We helped Ocean Studies Charter School plant gardens representing the following Keys ecosystems: Hammock Understory, Hammock Butterfly Garden, Pine Rockland, Coastal Dune, Sawgrass Prairie and Cypress Swamp.
Members helped Key Largo School install a butterfly garden and helped teachers with the great pollinator count.
Protecting and conserving natural resources by community education and presence...
Several of our members are Master Gardeners, who hold monthly plant clinics and demonstrations at Key Largo Library, Islamorada Library, and the Francis Tracy Clubhouse.
Since 1980, our community and members have come together at Garden Walk to learn about private gardens in the Upper Keys.
Our community outreach efforts also include providing meals at Burton Memorial Church. We are pleased to be members of the Key Largo and the Islamorada Chambers of Commerce.
Maintaining our gardens as a teaching tool…
Our gardens are a natural hardwood hammock that offer a home to native and migrating birds and butterflies.
We are a member of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden’s Native Plant Network for pine rocklands.
Our property includes more than 300 plant species; nearly half of them are native to the Florida Keys. Botanical markers provide the scientific and common name and indicate native species.
